The City's Water Conservation Accomplishments
The City of Prineville believes that conservation is crucial to successful water management. Because of this, we have invested in improving the efficiency of our water delivery system and updated our technology for tracking water consumption.
In 2017, the City won the Best Water Management and Conservation Plan Award from the Oregon Water Resources Department for significantly reducing water loss in the water distribution system. We are very proud of this accomplishment, and thankful to Apple, Inc., for the nomination.
Here’s what the City did to reduce water waste, improve efficiency, and save money:
- Replaced old wooden water distribution mainlines that were leaking
- Began conducting monthly water audits to detect leaks in water distribution lines
- Installed meters on unmetered connections
- Installed a computerized bulk water station
Other ways the City has helped save water and promote conservation:
- We worked with the golf course to switch to nonpotable water to irrigate 7.5 acres, saving about 51,000 gallons of drinking water per day.
- We offer free leak detection tablets, lawn watering gauges, faucet aerators, and low-flow showerheads, available at City Hall.
- We developed water conservation brochures and educational materials to help you learn how to save water, reduce leaks, and landscape more efficiently.
- We have given presentations to students and local community groups about water planning and conservation.
- Our city ordinances strongly encourage low-water use landscaping in mixed-use and open spaces.
- Our water bills include water conservation tips.
